吳厚元，作曲家、指揮家、教育家。中央音樂學院教授、中國民族管弦樂學會常務理事、美中藝術音樂學會顧問。1946年11月18日，出生於湖北省武漢市，原籍湖北大冶人，曾用名「無言」。1955年隨張萍舟學琵琶演奏；1960年，考入湖北省歌劇團任琵琶演奏員；1963年，考入中央音樂學院附中主修琵琶；1964年，轉入中國音樂學院附中，自修作曲與指揮，創作了一首琵琶獨奏曲，並入選為學校教材，又曾指揮附中樂隊、合唱隊演出；1969年，分配到北京京劇團任琵琶演奏員；同時隨王酩學習作曲和配器；1979年初，調入中央音樂學院附中任教；1981年，評為講師，開始向趙行道教授學習作曲；1983年開始參加籌建中央音樂學院民樂團，並任音樂指導。此外還為民樂團編配了許多伴奏曲譜，如《秦腔牌子曲》、《流浪者之歌》等。該團曾參加「英國杜倫東方音樂節」、「愛丁堡國際藝術節」等重大國際音樂活動，並出訪了美國紐約等13個城市。1987年，借調到中國音樂學院兩年；1988年，自費赴美國講學；1993年回國後，在中央音樂學院研究所從事創作。吳厚元的代表作品有：第一二胡協奏曲《紅梅隨想曲》、第二二胡協奏曲《竹韻》、京胡獨奏曲《京郊行》（榮獲「北京市1982年度音樂創作」一等獎）、京胡協奏曲《人與戲──讀〈三國志〉有感》、琵琶協奏曲《訴——讀唐詩〈琵琶行〉有感》，還有墜胡曲《家鄉的喜訊》、箏五重奏《三人行》等。1999年8月24日，在北京因病去世，終年53歲。
WU Hou-yuan (November 18, 1946 – August 24, 1999) was a composer, conductor, and educator. He was a professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, executive director of the Chinese Traditional Orchestra Society, and advisor to the Sino-American Arts and Music Association. WU Hou-yuan was born on November 18, 1946, in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. He was originally from Daye, Hubei Province and also used the name “Wu Yan.” In 1955, he began studying pipa (a traditional Chinese musical instrument) under ZHANG Ping-zhou. In 1960, he joined the Hubei Opera Troupe as a pipa player. In 1963, he entered the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music, majoring in pipa. In 1964, he transferred to the Attached Middle School of the China Conservatory of Music, where he self-studied composition and conducting. He composed a solo pipa piece that was selected as a school textbook and conducted performances with the school orchestra and choir. In 1969, he was assigned to the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe as a pipa player while studying composition and orchestration with WANG Ming. In early 1979, he joined the Middle School Affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music as a teacher. In 1981, he was promoted to lecturer and began studying composition with ZHAO Xing-dao. In 1983, he participated in the establishment of the Central Conservatory of Music Traditional Orchestra and served as the music director. He also arranged many accompaniment scores for the orchestra, such as “Qin Opera Pai Zi Qu” and “Song of the Wanderer”. The orchestra participated in major international music events such as the “Durham Oriental Music Festival” and the “Edinburgh International Arts Festival” and toured 13 cities in the United States, including New York. In 1987, he was temporarily transferred to the China Conservatory of Music for two years. In 1988, he went to the United States for further studies. After returning to China in 1993, he worked at the Institute of the Central Conservatory of Music as a composer. Wu Hou-yuan’s representative works include the First Erhu Concerto “Red Plum Capriccio”, the Second Erhu Concerto “Bamboo Rhyme”, the Jinghu Solo “A Trip to the Outskirts of Beijing” (awarded the first prize in the “1982 Beijing Music Composition” competition), the Jinghu Concerto “Man and Drama—Impressions from Reading ‘Records of the Three Kingdoms'”, the Pipa Concerto “Complaint—Impressions from Reading the Tang Poem ‘Pipa Xing'”, as well as the Zhui Hu piece “Good News from Hometown” and the Zheng Quintet “Three Travellers”. WU Hou-yuan passed away on August 24, 1999, in Beijing at the age of 53 due to illness.
