譚盾，作曲家、指揮家。1957年8月18日出生於湖南省長沙市絲茅涌，入籍美國後旅居紐約市。1975年高中畢業後，在望城縣京劇團工作。1977年，考入北京中央音樂學院，攻讀指揮和作曲雙專業，師從李華德、趙行道、黎英海；碩士畢業後，受當代作曲家武滿徹、佐治•克拉姆、亞歷山大•葛爾、漢斯•維爾納•亨策、尹伊桑、周文中等影響。1986年，獲美國哥倫比亞大學獎學金，隨周文中及大衛多夫斯基學習，並取得音樂藝術博士學位，亦受實驗音樂作曲家菲利普•格拉斯、約翰•凱奇、梅苪迪斯•蒙克、斯蒂夫•萊奇等影響。1997年，在香港回歸慶典中與馬友友及張學友合演其作品交響曲《天•地•人》。2006年，被評為影響世界的十位華人之一。2008年，為北京奧運會創作徽標Logo音樂樂和頒獎音樂。2010年，擔任中國上海世博會全球文化大使。2013年，聯合國教科文組織任命其為親善大使。2017年，獲威尼斯雙年展金獅獎。2019年，開始搪任美國巴德音樂學院院長之職。2023年，擔任香港文化推廣大使。他的部分主要作品包括：交響曲《離騷》、民族管弦樂《西北組曲》、弦樂四重奏《風雅頌》、電影音樂《臥虎藏龍》、電影音樂《南京1937》、電影音樂《英雄》、舞劇《黃土地》、歌劇《九歌》、歌劇《馬可波羅》、歌劇《牡丹亭》、中樂器樂曲《金木水火土》……等等。
TAN Dun (born August 18, 1957) is a composer and conductor. He was born in Simao Township, Changsha City, Hunan Province, China, and later became a naturalized citizen of the United States, residing in New York City. After graduating from high school in 1975, he worked at the Beijing Opera Troupe in Wangcheng County. In 1977, TAN Dun was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he studied conducting and composition under the guidance of LI Hua-de, ZHAO Xing-dao, and LI Ying-hai. After completing his master’s degree, he was influenced by contemporary composers such as WU Man-chi, George Crumb, Alexander Goehr, Hans Werner Henze, John Cage, and ZHOU Wen-zhong.
In 1986, Tan Dun received a scholarship from Columbia University in the United States and studied under ZHOU Wen-zhong and Davidovsky. He obtained a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and was also influenced by experimental music composers such as Philip Glass, John Cage, Meredith Monk, and Steve Reich. In 1997, he performed his composition “Symphony: Heaven Earth Mankind” with Yo-Yo Ma and Jacky Cheung during the Hong Kong handover ceremony. In 2006, he was recognized as one of the ten influential Chinese people in the world. In 2008, he composed the music for the logo and award ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2010, he served as the Global Cultural Ambassador for the Shanghai World Expo in China. In 2013, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador by UNESCO. In 2017, he received the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale. In 2019, he assumed the position of Dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music in the United States. In 2023, he became the Cultural Ambassador for Hong Kong.
Some of TAN Dun’s notable works include the symphony “Orchestra: Out of the Sorrow”, the orchestral suite “Northwest Suite”, the string quartet “Concerto for String Quartet”, the film scores for “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, “Nanjing 1937”, and “Hero”, the dance drama “The Map”, the operas “Nine Songs”, “Marco Polo”, and “Peony Pavilion”, and the Chinese instrumental music composition “Five Elements”.
