吳祖強，作曲家、教育家，中國文聯原副主席，中央音樂學院原院長。原籍江蘇武進，1927年7月24日出生於北京。小學和中學時代在音樂家盛家倫、張定和的影響下立志學習音樂。1947年，入南京國立音樂院理論作曲系，師從江定仙。1952年，在中央音樂學院畢業後，赴蘇聯留學，入莫斯科國立柴科夫斯基音樂學院理論作曲系學習。1958年，畢業歸國，在中央音樂學院作曲系任教。1958年至1986年先後任中央音樂學院作曲系講師，中央樂團創作組組長，中央音樂學院臨時領導小組副院長、院長，文化部黨組成員等。1986年至1996年任中國文聯黨組書記，中央音樂學院院長，中國音樂家協會副主席，中國文聯執行副主席，中央音樂學院教授、博士生導師。1996年至2001年任中國文聯副主席。曾兼任國際音樂理事會執行委員，國家教委藝術委員會委員等。2019年9月離休。他的重要作品有：弦樂四重奏、交響音畫《在祖國的大地上》、清唱劇《與洪水搏鬥》，與杜鳴心合作的舞劇《魚美人》、《紅色娘子軍》的音樂，與王燕樵、劉德海合作的琵琶與管弦樂隊協奏曲《草原小姐妹》等。還將《二泉映月》、《聽松》改編為弦樂合奏，《江河水》》改編為二胡與管弦樂隊合奏曲，《春江花月夜》改編為琵琶與管弦樂隊協奏曲。2022年3月14日因病在北京逝世，享年95歲。
WU Zu-qiang (July 24, 1927 ～ March 14, 2022)
WU Zu-qiang was a composer and educator, the former Vice Chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC), and the former President of the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM). He was born on July 24, 1927, in Beijing, with ancestral roots in Wujin, Jiangsu Province. During his primary and secondary school years, influenced by musicians SHENG Jia-lun and ZHANG Ding-he, he aspired to study music.
In 1947, Wu entered the Theory and Composition Department of the National Conservatory of Music in Nanjing, where he studied under JIANG Ding-xian. In 1952, after graduating from the Central Conservatory of Music, he went to study in the Soviet Union and enrolled in the Theory and Composition Department of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. After his graduation in 1958, he returned to China and began teaching at the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music.
From 1958 to 1986, Wu held various positions at the Central Conservatory of Music, including lecturer at the Composition Department, head of the Central Orchestra Composition Group, Vice President and President of the Interim Leadership Group of the Central Conservatory of Music, and member of the Party Group of the Ministry of Culture. From 1986 to 1996, he served as the Secretary of the Party Group of the CFLAC, President of the Central Conservatory of Music, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Musicians’ Association, Executive Vice Chairman of the CFLAC, professor and doctoral supervisor at the Central Conservatory of Music. From 1996 to 2001, he served as the Vice Chairman of the CFLAC. He also held positions such as Executive Committee Member of the International Music Council and Member of the Arts Committee of the National Education Commission. He retired in September 2019.
Wu’s significant works include String Quartet, Symphonic Tone Poem “On the Land of Our Motherland,” Oratorio “Struggling with Floods,” the music for the ballets “The Fish Beauty” and “The Red Detachment of Women” in collaboration with DU Ming-xin, and the Pipa and Orchestra Concerto “The Little Sisters on the Prairie” in collaboration with WANG Yan-qiao and LIU De-hai. He also arranged “Reflection of the Moon on Lake Erquan” and “Listening to the Pines” for string ensemble, “River Waters” for erhu and orchestra, and “Moonlight over the River in Spring” for pipa and orchestra.
WU Zu-qiang passed away on March 14, 2022, in Beijing at the age of 95, due to illness.
