侯作吾先生,名卓,又名遇辰,祖籍四川省營山縣四喜場人,一九一O年出生於家鄉,一九六三年初,在四川音樂學院任教時,因患食道癌,往上海醫治無效逝世。侯先生自幼牲敏好學,尤愛琴藝繪畫,一九三三年畢業於上海藝專,後放洋日本求學,竟逆父意,棄政從藝。回國後,參加上海古琴界雅集,鼓彈自己創編的《高山流水》,名噪浦江。新中國成立後,侯先生先後任職中央音樂學院、上海音樂學院、四川音樂學院,教授古琴,又與楊蔭瀏先生整理出版《古琴曲匯編》,他是我國第一個將古琴減字譜譯成五譜出版的人。
HOU Zuo-wu was born in 1910 in his ancestral home Yingshan County, Sichuan Province and he passed away of illness in early 1963 in Shanghai. He was fond of arts, especially in playing the qin and painting. In 1933, he graduated from the Art Academy of Shanghai and went abroad for further study in Japan. After coming back from abroad, he visited the qin players in Shanghai and got fame in playing his arrangement of High Mountains and Flowing Water. After the formation of the new China, he taught the qin in Central Conservatory, Shanghai Conservatory. Sichuan Conservatory. He was the first man to translate the traditional qin scores to the staff and published the Music Scores of Guqin together with YANG Yin-liu.
